100 Word Reviews | The Favourite

Olivia Colman’s Queen Anne gets to have her cake, chomp it, vomit it, and eat some more in The Favourite. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, Colman’s performance alongside Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone deftly flickers from absurd to tragic—she makes it easy to laugh at her in one scene and cry with her the next.

The Favourite hinges on it’s leading lady, but Nicholas Hoult’s role as Robert Harley, opposition party leader and arsehole delivering wicked bantz demands notice. From aristocrats cheering on racing ducks to diabolical scheming, Lanthimos subverts period-piece dramas by distilling both the inane nature of nobility and the fiendish nature of survival.
